Facilities Maintenance and or Operations
Reality Check: The Post Occupancy Evaluation Process
In December 2007, the Texas Tech Health Science Center Physicians Medical Pavilion (PMP) construction was completed and the facility occupied. This year, after over two years of operation a team from FKP Architects, the design architecture firm, is conducted an indicative Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE). This work was performed in conjunction with members of the Health Science Center Physical Plant Planning and Construction as well as the administration, faculty, clinical staff at the facility, at no charge to the Owner. It has documented valuable lessons learned from the successes and failures of the project and added to the knowledge or evidence based approach to design for future facilities. This presentation will give an overview of the levels or types of POEs and what as well as who should be involved in the POE process. The presentation will have documented results of surveys, interviews, and observations comparing POE results with the original building design objectives; and provide evidence of lessons learned, and recommendations for modifications of operational and design processes. In addition, the attendees will learn the value of the POE process and why it should be considered a standard practice for all major new facilities.
