Sustainability Sports Strategies
Arenas and stadium can evoke strong memories about your favorite teams and rouse the passions of many people; however, sports facilities have fallen behind other major building types when it comes to sustainability efforts. A few projects have been LEED Certified, but in general green design is usually an afterthought. Due to the amount of people served by these buildings they can become instrumental in teaching sustainable practices to people who would not otherwise come in contact with it. We will look at three current university sports facility designs that are pursuing LEED Certification. The projects are UNT’s new football stadium, a redevelopment of TCU’s football stadium and UTA’s new special events center. We will review how the ownership, contractor and design team worked together throughout the design process to limit added cost while maximizing the benefits of sustainable strategies.
