Campus Design Standards - Moving from a Green Policy to a Green Campus
Developing and implementing campus design standards is an art and science for owners and consultants who need both flexibility and strong guidance in order to succeed in implementing a campus master plan. The most often overlooked key to successful design standards is a deep understanding of the character and spirit of the campus as well as the natural and regional context. This depth of understanding, critical to developing implementable and lasting design standards, is all too often lacking on many planning teams. Additionally, standards must find the right balance between flexibility and prescription to invite innovation while maintaining the overall vision. We will look at the process for developing appropriate standards, whether to include less traditional elements such as art and stormwater treatment, and take a detailed look at a specific case study to explore the successes and trials of implementing campus design standards on two specific projects.
