William E. Butler, AIA, LEED AP, is a Partner at Pelli Clarke & Partners. Over the course of more than four decades, Mr. Butler has established himself as one of the firm’s foremost design leaders, guiding complex, high-profile projects across academic, institutional, cultural, and commercial sectors.
Bill’s approach to academic design is rooted in a deep understanding of how universities function as communities. He emphasizes placemaking—welcoming sequences of space, light, and material—along with transparent studios and labs linked to informal collaboration areas, acoustically aware instructional spaces, and future-ready infrastructure. Known for consensus building and attentive client service, Bill consistently aligns faculty, students, administrators, and facilities leaders around measurable goals for performance, schedule, and budget. His work reflects a conviction that great academic architecture does not merely house a program—it actively advances an institution’s mission and identity.
His academic project portfolio includes the School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Computer Science Complex at the University of Texas at Austin.
A committed educator, Bill taught architecture at the Yale School of Architecture for fourteen years.
